Not occurring in the peninsula region where we visited... but none-the-less, these enormous iceberg formations represent earth altering events.
Since the middle of the last century, the continent has lost over 8,000 square miles of ice.

It was several years ago that we took a cruise from Iceland over to Norway. While touring in the Svalbard Islands, the captain came on the intercom and announced we were leaving that planned stop early and taking an unexpected side trip... to visit the 'polar icecap.'

It was a highly unusual journey, for in all prior years, the summertime weather (heavy fog) prevented any of the cruise ships from going to the icecap.
But this year the weather was crystal clear, and we had a great experience visiting the polar cap. It was also the first year flight tours could not land tours at the North Pole, for it was open water at the pole... they had to put down almost 10 miles away.

More effects of climate change.... now 'open water' is a common summertime occurrence... probably will be for all our future..
